THIS book is intended for the use of students who have a fair knowledge of elementary algebra and plane geometry, and is the outcome of several years of experience with classes of this sort. The author hopes that the volume will also be acceptable to more advanced scholars.

The teacher may here be reminded of the fact that among the most urgent needs in the study of astronomy is the exercise of the geometric imagination ; that is, the faculty which forms mental pictures of the relative positions of planes and circles, and of the motions, real and apparent, of the celestial bodies.
